This issue has been delayed partly because the schools in mainland Australia have been on school holidays and partly because we've been quite busy!
I have often pondered the increase in the incidence of peanut allergy in our children. It certainly wasn't a huge problem when I first went into practice but in the last ten years has certainly become a major concern for many families. The last issue of Living Wisdom, the publication put out by the AVN, had a thought provoking article on this very subject and I have reproduced some of this article here under their permission to disseminate information. The terms 'allergy' and 'anaphylaxis' were created following a strange illness that affected up to 50% of children at the close of the 1800s. This illness was simply called 'serum sickness' and followed the mass administration of diphtheria anti-toxin sera. In 1901 another doctor, Charles Richet, stumbled on the same phenomenon during attempts to vaccinate dogs with a jellyfish poison in trace amounts to create a level of tolerance to it. However, when he injected the animals a second time he provoked a violent reaction that quickly killed the dogs. Richet experimented further and quickly discovered that any protein including food proteins injected into the bloodstream will result in sensitisation and anaphylaxis on subsequent exposures. Prior to the advent of vaccination, mass allergy such as serum sickness was unknown. The dilemma of serum-induced allergy was summarised by allergist Warren Vaughan in 1941: "Serum disease, as this is called, is a man-made malady. If we had no curative serums and if there were no such things as a hypodermic syringe with which to introduce the material under the skin, there would be no serum disease. Instead multitudes would still be dying from diphtheria and lockjaw . . . Thus we find our-selves in somewhat of a dilemma, faced with the necessity for choosing the lesser of two potential evils." Warren Vaughan, Strange Malady (1941) As vaccine ingredients became better refined to reduce the sensitising proteins, the prevalence of serum sickness decreased. With the 20th century expansion of vaccination programs and schedules, however, other unforeseen problems arose to take its place. Peanut allergy emerged in the medical literature for the first time in a study of children injected with the new 'wonder drug', penicillin in 1947. To prolong the action, an army doctor, mixed the drug with what was handy during wartime – peanut oil. It was a simple solution in which the body would metabolise the oil and slowly release the drug into the bloodstream. Unfortunately the formula also sensitised a handful of children and adults to peanuts. To reduce this side effect, improvements were made in peanut oil refinement, again to remove as much sensitising protein as possible from an injection. Even today, the most 'highly refined' peanut oil contains trace intact proteins. Regardless, with its relative success in penicillin, peanut oil was adopted into common use within the pharmaceutical industry. I must now paraphrase a long and interesting article, by saying that although it was decided that the reactions to peanut oil were acceptable, it was seen that around 1990 something changed suddenly to cause the prevalence of peanut allergy to accelerate in children. At this point swift and dramatic changes were made in the vaccination schedule in many Western countries and the problem continued to grow. The new conjugate vaccine HIB was rolled into five vaccines in one needle and delivered without the benefit of any long-term study. Vaccines were produced containing adjuvants based on a peanut oil adjuvant 65-4 produced by Merck in 1964 which was documented to sensitise recipients to vaccine proteins. Recent flu vaccines use peanut oil as a carrier and a 2008 flu immunogen and vaccine favoured peanut oil. Patents for the newborn vitamin K shot use peanut oil and it is also a common carrier for childhood vaccines including conjugates like Hib. The problem for parents is that Governments by law cannot and will not disclose all the vaccine ingredients. Corporate law shields vaccine makers from Freedom of Information Acts. Labelling laws do not apply to ingredients deemed safe. So where does that leave parents with a child who has been sensitised to not just peanuts but other allergens creating a life fraught with dangers. In my own practice I find I use vaccination detoxing and heavy metal detoxing more and more as it becomes evident that children are suffering not just allergies but other more insidious and chronic health problems that can be related back to vaccination. There are ways to protect your children to some degree during the vaccination process but some children are just more sensitive and susceptible than others. To my mind it is time to have a say in a process which can affect the life of not just your children, but their children too. While I don't warrant the accuracy of this article but provide it for information, I urge you to seek further information yourself. Mercury Toxicity: Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Last month I talked about high levels of Copper and the picture they present in patients. This month I wanted to touch on Mercury which may be absorbed from a range of substances in our environment. Mercury is still used widely in manufacturing. It is also commonly picked up through foods such as seafood and fish. Manufacturing discharges into rivers can contribute to levels, as can damming rivers which causes production of elemental mercury as trees die and decompose. This then is transformed into an organic form of mercury which is more dangerous to humans. Unlike other toxic elements, mercury is able to cross the blood-brain and placental barriers. Hair analysis may not initially show up mercury overload until other toxic elements are chelated (removed). It is often buried deep in the tissues but may present as some or all of the symptoms below:
I use homeopathy for the chelation (removal of the toxic overload) because it's simple and effective. Often a liver support remedy is required and looking at mineral levels and diet may help too. Chelation can be done with other natural methods but from my experience homeopathy can work more quickly, although it does sometimes cause an aggravation of symptoms. This can be managed however and certainly shows the treatment plan is working. Recovery Combination: This remedy was made for use during surgery, but is a great combination to use for wounds as it contains Arnica (bruising and bleeding); Calendula (promotes healing and helps prevent infection); and Hypericum (injuries of areas rich in nerves, puncture wounds, splinters, bites and stings with shooting pain, promotes healing and helps prevent infection). Bellis Perennis is also included in this combination (aimed at injury/surgery to deep muscles eg caesarean). How can it be nearly Christmas again??!! Some cases will respond to normal constitutional treatment, but sometimes this toxicity creates an obstacle to cure and needs to be removed before health can be restored. In simple terms what this means is that the indicated remedies that we might traditionally use don't work as expected because they can't get through the layer created by the heavy metal (or vaccine). The system has been thrown off balance so much that we are looking at a different path to cure, often involving chelation (see below) or vaccination detoxing.
