Tissue Salts: a useful and important tool in your homeopathic kit

Many users of homeopathy forget about or aren’t even aware of the Tissue Salts.

The basic twelve salts are remedies I use frequently in daily practice, and you’ll understand why as you read this article, but the time I find them most useful is when I get the following phone call or text:

Caller: I’ve come away for the weekend and I don’t have my kit and my child is sick.

Me: Is there anywhere near you that stocks homeopathics?

Caller: No!

Me: Is there a good pharmacy or health food shop nearby?

Caller: Yes

My logic here is that while not everywhere sells homeopathic remedies these days, many pharmacies and most health food shops do sell tissue salts. They are usually available in the twelve single salts and sometimes in the proprietary combinations manufactured by Martin & Pleasance (M&P) in Australia.

So what are Tissue Salts?
The foundations of biochemisty were laid down in the late 1800s by Rudolph Virchow, one of the foremost scientists of the day. Virchow discovered that the body was made up of millions of tiny cells and that each cell consisted of three perfectly balanced classes of material; water, organic and inorganic substances.

The inorganic (mineral) substances he discovered are the really vital elements for the function of the body and the building blocks of life.

Dr Schussler determined that these inorganic substances were present in the body as compounds (mineral salts) and he named twelve principal compounds which he called the Tissue Salts.

He went on to identify how the tissue salts were utilized in the body and he worked out their affinities for the various conditions the body is prone to. Over the years this information has been added to until we have a wealth of information on these twelve salts.

The five principles of the Tissue Salts are (1):

1. Disease does not occur if cell metabolism is normal.
2. Cell metabolism is normal if cell nutrition is adequate.
3. Nutritional substances are either of an organic or inorganic nature where the body is concerned.
4. The ability of the cells to assimilate and to excrete and further to utilise nutritional material is impaired if there is deficiency in the inorganic mineral (tissue salt) constituent of cellular tissue.
5. Adequate cell nutrition may be restored and cellular metabolism normalised by supplying the required tissue salts to the organism in a finely divided assimilable form.

So we can actually understand from these principles that tissue salts are not just useful in acute illness but also in chronic conditions where they nourish and balance the system because they are easy to assimilate into the body.

Are Tissue Salts and Celloids the same?

Many naturopaths prescribe celloids which some of you will be familiar with. I have heard people say that tisue salts and minerals/celloids are the same, however, this is not the case.

Minerals such as celloids and other mineral supplements have similar properties to tissue salts but they are a physical nutrient.  They need to be broken down in the gut to build the minerals your system needs. This is not always helpful if you have poor gut function and it is worth knowing that Blackmores Celloids are prepared in a lactose base. It may also be possible to overdo minerals by taking too many for too long.

Tissue salts (also known as Cell Salts) work to stimulate the body to function more effectively and efficiently. They stimulate cell metabolism and ensure that the minerals which the body ingests in food and through supplements are evenly distributed and help the body’s utilization of the minerals from concentrations in the blood. Tissue salts support healing processes in the body by regulating mineral levels in the cells.

Tissue salts are not measured like supplements, but are dispensed in tiny homeopathic doses. In homeopathic potency tissue salts balance rather than supplement.

There are only twelve tissue salts in the basic range but because these salts have such a major affinity for the function of the body, there are always one or two salts in the range to help most situations.

As well as the single and combination remedies, there is also a range for use during pregnancy. Each tissue salt is selected for its affinity for a particular function at a particular stage in the pregnancy and they help to support the developing foetus and mum. Have a look on our website for further information.

So back to that earlier phone call!

Tissue salts are really useful in a wide range of conditions and particularly for acute health issues, so my reason for asking my caller if they can get tissue salts somewhere is that I then just pick one or two tissue salts which match the current symptoms. This might be the beginning of a cold or flu, an injury or even an emotional upset – there’s a tissue salt for everything.

You don’t need to limit yourself to one salt and can use them in combination if there are several which seem to fit the picture. Some people recommend alternating doses if using more than one salt. M&P, however, have a range of proprietary combinations and you will find a similar range on the Elements of Health website.

All you need to do is find the single salts or even the combination which has the tissue salts you need, regardless of the name. Just the other day I sent a client off to buy the M&P Fibrositis combination for a viral illness with cough and lethargy because it contained the tissue salts I wanted him to have!

How do you use tissue salts?
They can be taken in exactly the same way as any other homeopathic remedy. In an acute illness, ie cold, flu, ear ache, they might be required 3 or 4 times a day for a few days. If symptoms are intense they can be taken every 10 minutes for up to 5 doses, then reduced as things improve.

In a chronic, long standing condition, Dr Schussler used to recommend taking them 4 times a day for 120 days. Really it depends on the condition and the individual situation but I’ve certainly seen tissue salts bring improvement very quickly in acute ailments and even in mental/emotional issues such as shock or grief.

What are the 12 Tissue Salts?
You will probably recognise a lot of these remedies and may even have some of them in your kit in a 30c potency.

I always say that a 30c is a good mid-range potency which works on the mental, emotional and physical levels equally. It is suitable for most home prescriber situations without having to worry about whether you are giving too high a potency which may aggravate. However, I have found the 6x potency to have a similar effect and speed of action and I suspect this is because the presenting symptoms are showing where the nutritional imbalance is and bringing balance rapidly when the selected salts are correct. It’s not hard to be correct with only 12 salts to choose from!

My all time favorite Tissue Salts

Having run the Children’s Ear Clinic for many years, the tissue salts I find the most useful are Kali Mur 6x and Ferrum Phos 6x. Basically Kali Mur has an affinity for mucous and Ferrum Phos for fevers and inflammation so this is a great combination for the beginnings of anything which may morph into an ear infection, cold, flu, etc. Ferrum Phos in particular has a picture of no picture! What I mean by this is that if you have only vague symptoms which don’t let you pick a remedy to get started with managing an illness, think of Ferrum Phos.

At Elements of Health we added Natrum Mur 6x to the original combination of Kali Mur 6x and Ferrum Phos 6x to cover those illnesses that start with a fever, pain, mucous, runny nose and sneezing and we called it TS Acutes. It is one of our most frequently dispensed remedies because most of my mums know this is what you pick if you suspect your child is coming down with something and often it will head off more acute symptoms.

As I said previously, I use tissue salts frequently in my practice to support nutrition and assimilation and to bring balance where it is evident this is required by the body. They are definitely worth incorporating into your healthcare regime and becoming aware of for when you find yourself unable to access a range of remedies in 30c potency.

And finally I have recently made the discovery that there are now 27 Tissue Salts and I am gradually incorporating the additional 15 into my practice – but that’s another story!
