Back to School Stress

January tends to be the time that the calls about back to school nerves ramp up, but of course this can happen anytime a child has to change schools.

Going to a new school for the first time can be a big stress for some children (and many parents too) and sometimes no amount of preparation can get them over it.

Don’t forget too that there can be a level of grief around leaving old friends behind when children change schools and this can manifest in a range of ways, which may not just be emotional. Ongoing colds, onset of allergies, upset tummies, headaches and bed wetting can all be caused by grief and loss, and we sometimes forget that some children have long memories!

There are a number of remedies which can be helpful with back to school stress, depending on the individual situation, but obviously if your home prescribing is not effective, consider a consultation, particular if the child is very distressed and experiencing symptoms such as nightmares, or bed wetting becomes a problem. Getting on top of these things quickly makes for an easier transition into school.

I’ve listed here some of the useful remedies, combinations and WyldChyld Essences that might make this time of year easier for you and your child.

S.O.S. – This is our own version of Rescue Remedy, designed for the challenges of the 21st century and this may be a simple solution for some children. You can put a few drops in their water bottle to help them through the day and this is often sufficient.

Arg Nit – The child needing Arg Nit finds school quite scary resulting in anxiety with panic and sometimes diarrhoea. The behaviour may be impulsive, a bit irrational, and the child may find it difficult to concentrate. The picture of this child is quite fearful and very anxious, with low self-confidence. They often have a sweet tooth!

Calc Carb children are a bit slow and ploddy, but quite bright. They can’t be hurried and they need time to assimilate all the new ideas and rules. Change is not a good thing for them and they are slow to accept it. They may be clumsy, are often not great at sport and hate being laughed at. While I don’t like to stereotype remedy pictures, they may also be a little overweight and a bit clammy.

Calc Phos can be a good remedy for the child who starts to suffer headaches and tummy aches once they start school, particularly if they are a bit whingy!!

Gelsemium – This child dreads performing in front of the class – doing news, show and tell, etc – and becomes tired, shaky and almost paralysed with fear.

Ignatia – This remedy always comes to mind when little ones suffer from separation anxiety. It’s all about grief – being taken away from mum and home and becoming a little hysterical with the worry of it all. Ignatia can also be good for Mum’s who suffer grief and anxiety when their first born (or second or even third!!) goes off to school for the first time and they feel a bit lost.

Lycopodium – These children can become very apprehensive about new situations and tend to show off and boss other children around to compensate. They have a big craving for sweet things and often a problem with wind (ie digestion)!

Natrum Mur – Nat Mur is a remedy for quite deep grief, so leaving friends behind and grieving in silence over their loss. These children are a bit perfectionist, quite serious and prone to dwelling on things from the past. They will often have trouble falling asleep due to thoughts of what’s happened in their day or what’s to come. Interestingly, these children may hate school toilets, either because they are dirty or because they can’t go when someone else is nearby and will hang on until they get home!!

Nux Vomica – This child is particularly irritable/angry and may have quite serious trouble sleeping. Usually waking early in the morning (3-4am is a common time) thinking about school, then falling asleep again and waking sluggish and grumpy. They are inclined to pick fights, are perfectionist, highly competitive and hate to lose!!

Pulsatilla – These children are sweet and gentle and can be very weepy and clingy when uncertain about something. They are often difficult children to send off to school and some mum’s end up keeping them home for a few more months. They are quite good manipulators too!

Silica is useful for those children who are shy and timid by nature and very anxious about anything new, meeting new people and so on, to the point that it can be impossible to get anything out of them until they are more comfortable. They do, however, have quite a strong sense of self, strong views and can be quite obstinate – but you won’t know it until you get to know them!

And of course don’t forget the WyldChyld Essences:

Special Friend feels like there is someone to hold your hand or a guardian angel in your pocket!

My Bubble is great for children who are super sensitive to everything and are overwhelmed by too much noise and stimulation.

It’s All Good can be great if your child is a worrier.

Sweet Dreams is one of our best selling essences for sleep disturbed by dreams or worry or trouble falling asleep from thoughts of what’s to come.

Wyld Inside can be helpful for tantrums and angry outbursts triggered by anxiety.

Take a look on the website and pick one or even two appropriate to the child and the situation. Pop them in their water bottle and see the changes. If things don’t improve, then a consultation may be required to look at the deeper issues.

And if none of the above are helping, get in contact for a consultation. This not only helps move a child through this situation, but can set them up for a good start to their new year.
