What does your child inherit from you?

I’m often saying to distressed parents of sick children that no child is born with a clean slate.

Sometimes when you’ve worked so hard to do everything right from conception to toddlership and beyond, it can be hard to understand your child having issues such as poor teeth, asthma or eczema or something more serious and chronic.

You may have done all the right things to conceive; both having undertaken rigid pre-conception health tuneups, detoxed, chelated, supplemented and gone vegetarian.

You may have had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, eaten organic, done yoga religiously and meditated, taken your supplements and seen your chiro, had a textbook birth and breastfed for years, and cooked everything organically from scratch for bub, avoiding sugar, gluten, dairy and so on..

But the biggest factor in your child’s health, apart from all the good things you have done, is what they inherit from the family on both sides, right down the line – or what we now talk about as their genetics.

Homeopaths have been looking at this inherited level for more than 200 years. If you’ve ever been to a homeopath you’ll know that we will pick through the family line, question you about who had what, who had tuberculosis or asthma or cancer and so on.

Many people think that because they only had childhood asthma and they no longer have it, it’s gone, and they are surprised when I tell them that the reason their own child has asthma is because of that inheritance. There will obviously be triggers for the asthma to show up, but it will be there behind the scenes and it may pop up if the system is stressed.

The same goes for things like crumbling or discoloured teeth, just as an example of something that I’m seeing frequently in this younger generation. This is nothing to do with your diet through pregnancy or how often or how long you breastfeed, and much more to do, again, with the family medical history.

These miasmatic taints, as we homeopaths call them, have distinct patterns of sickness and disease, and we can often see one miasm running strongly through a family line, or a miasm which is uppermost at any particular time, because it is possible to have more than one miasm in one person, representing all the different inter-relationships down through the ages and what they all bring to the party!

Most people will have an active miasm to some degree. So even if you are a really robust, healthy person a miasm will be active and what is in your personal family line will generally determine what path the dis-ease will take if triggered. You might just have dry skin or oily hair or a plantar wart, but your miasmatic tendency, and therefore susceptibility, will determine what form that takes.

So what can you do about this?

Luckily we have specific miasmatic remedies that we can use to settle the miasm back down and help to resolve the symptoms of the family inheritance.

Sometimes we’ll just use a constitutional (individualised) remedy, but all of these have affinity with a particular miasm or miasms anyway. Personally, I use the miasmatic remedy or nosode that is the head of the family of remedies in every case I treat. Sometimes right at the beginning of treatment if it’s showing its head, but certainly through the course of treatment. In fact I’m using the miasmatic nosodes more and more these days and sometimes not just one in a case, but maybe a couple when the different layers appear.

What triggers the miasmatic layer?

As I said above, there is always going to be a miasm active because in addition to the negative health issues, there are undoubtedly positive health benefits with certain miasms, like whether or not you have a robust gut, good bones and whether or not you are sensitive and susceptible to absorbing mercury or aluminium if you have a vaccination.

Not everyone is going to inherit everything, as is evidenced by looking at two children in a family who have completely different health profiles.

A difficult or stressful conception, IVF, for example, with all its drugs and hormones, a challenging birth, antibiotics in pregnancy or during the birth, environmental factors, stress, vaccination, acute illness, can all impact this level and activate the miasm. Symptoms may start quietly as gut issues or perhaps an oversensitive baby and just gradually increase, often with each additional assault on the immune system.

This is true of inheritance of things like mercury, copper and lead levels from the parents. We see this through comparing hair analysis of a child and the mother. The child may inherit a load of one or more heavy metals or high copper and then, partly because of their susceptibiity to do this and partly because of an already weakened immune system, they will usually continue to increase that load over their lifetime.

This means that a child who inherits a mercury load from the parent, either as the result of the parent having amalgams or vaccines or similar, is most likely going to be susceptible to picking up more mercury through their lifetime.

Copper, which I write about regularly in relation to what I see in hair analysis, is often high as a result of xenoestrogens (artificial hormones) in our environment. The most common source, apart from copper pipes and hormones in the food and water, is from contraceptives and IVF drugs – the oral contraceptive pill and copper IUDs being the main culprit. We now have at least three generations of women who have had the benefit of avoiding unwanted pregnancy, but whose health is now being impacted down the family line.

We also know that the state of the mother’s gut in pregnancy impacts the child’s gut, so again while you can do a lot with diet and supplements, we are looking at inheritance here.

Homeopathy & Genetics

I don’t know what other modalities look at and treat the inherited tendencies in this way. Certainly there are people who know that this increase in chronic health conditions is related to genetics and are looking at ways to manipulate them but we don’t know enough over a long enough timeframe to really have sound treatments in place. A lot of what is happening is in its infancy.

Homeopathically, we are starting to see quite a lot of research done into managing genetics with homeopathy and there were a couple of sessions on this topic at a homeopathy research conference I went to in Sydney recently. If you’re interested you could go to the Homeopathy Research Institute website (www.hri.co.uk) to find out more. The results are pretty compelling and definitely more than the placebo effect.

This modern concern with genetics is certainly something homeopaths consider important, and have done for over 200 years. This is nothing new for homeopaths, we’re just updating the language to match what’s happening in other areas of health!

I personally couldn’t imagine treating my patients without considering and addressing this tendency, because if we don’t treat the root of the problem, we cannot have long term improvement in health. We work with nature, encouraging the system to overcome the problem itself by giving it the right directions, rather than trying to “make it” or “manipulate”. Obviously we can’t fix everything but we do already have a very long history of observing, recording and supporting at this level.
