At this point in mankind’s evolution and at the start of a new decade we are working hard on building community to make change in our world: physically in our towns and villages, as parents and in families, and in a big way online, extending the reach of community globally. The power of the people is making change in our lifetime.
To be part of a community is easy for some – some people are just team players – but this togetherness can be challenging for others. There are a lot of reasons why some people are loners or just better one-on-one, and we could have a whole conversation about this, but one of the reasons we will explore here is our ancestry. Or as I have written in the post title – our ancestor’s story – ancestory!
Who and where we came from can be a reason for our ability or inability to relate or connect and it also determines who and what we resonate with and are drawn to.
What does this mean?
There are a couple of ways of looking at this. Many of us, when we hear the word “ancestor” will immediately think of grandparents, great grandparents and so on, going back through time, and this is certainly one level which can need healing.
Those of us who have explored some of the more esoteric concepts of life are likely to think of past lives or previous incarnations. While some will sniff at this, there is plenty of concrete evidence, particularly through research undertaken in India, for this to be a reality. Generally this is something that may be seen in small children usually up to the age of seven years, but often in clinic there is a sense that someone’s story relates not to their connection back through their genetic ancestry but to a different place and time.
There is also the subject of spiritual ancestry or lineage, but that is so huge it’s not a topic we are going to look at here today!
Why are we exploring this topic?
More and more as the years go by people have become very self-aware and are ready and willing to share their stories in order to heal. Probably as people begin to understand the deep healing power of homeopathy, they share more generously and in more detail and this allows the practitioner to get a feel for what connections to ‘dis-ease’ we are looking at. Not every case is going to need to go into this depth of detail, but there are those cases where the patient has spent their life trying to resolve their issues, visiting many therapists, undertaking programs, and perhaps doubting they can ever be well. These cases are the cases where the story may present in pieces like a puzzle, where connections are made and where we look back to see what is holding this person in this space.
Sometimes we even know what is holding us back from being fully healed. Just as an example, it may be clear that any issues – physical as well as mental, emotional and no doubt spiritual – on one level come from the female line on the mother’s side. Some of the history of these women is known going back four generations and it becomes clear that one of this person’s jobs in this lifetime is to break the cycles these women have perpetuated. So we have some real evidence of the ancestory, but interestingly – and this comes from a real case – in a six month period three different people, without any prompting or input, has confirmed that there were issues up the maternal side for six generations! Coincidence maybe but it certainly fits with the known facts in this particular case.
The Seat of our Ancestry
A TCM practitioner told me many years ago that the kidneys are the seat of our ancestry, something I always think about when I’m treating someone with kidney issues on the physical level. The kidneys – physical and energetic – are said to house our essence, which includes Qi, Fluids, Yin, Yang, and relates to growth and development, marrow and brain, as well as the aging process. Kidneys are connected with our genetic heritage, our pre-natal (or “pre-heaven”) Qi, providing a link to our ancestry and our world pre-birth (1). What this relates to is the essence that we incarnate with (rather than what we take on while we are here), who we are and where we came from. In order to be strong and balanced in this deepest area of ourselves, we need to protect and nourish from the inside out.
If you know anything about the chakra system, you may know that the kidneys (both essence and physically) relate to the solar plexus – the yellow light to the left. The colour yellow is no coincidence here, it’s the colour we associate with cowardice (and of course urine) and there is a strong connection with fear associated with the energy of the solar plexus.
So what does this mean for us as an individual?
As we talked out above with the kidneys, we have our essence and inheritance within us when we are born. While this doesn’t map out what we are going to do or be in our life, it does contain the essence of our forebears. Some elements will be strong and some will be less developed. Again, talking from an esoteric perspective, it may depend on what we’re choosing to work with on this level as to which elements will be strongest.
The Homeopathic Miasms
At this point it might be interesting to talk about the homeopathic miasms, again a whole blog – in fact probably a series of blogs – on the way homeopaths have grouped certain tendencies and types in relation to family inheritance, susceptibility and diseases, in order to treat these if they impact someone’s mental, emotional or physical health.
The one we’re particularly interested in this day and age is what we term “the syphilitic miasm”. I always have to follow that with “gross, I know!” But actually it’s not. It’s an observation going back to Hahnemann’s time (Samuel Hahnemann, founder of homeopathy, 1755-1843) when syphilis was rampant and he had the opportunity to observe its impact on and in the population.
Why are we interested in syphilis, a disease we might think of as being ancient history? Well, while it is still around today, what we are interested in is the picture of inheritance that runs through those who have this in their background – and in all honesty most of us do. Just like most of us probably have someone in the family who had tuberculosis, gonorrhea and cancer, all very physical manifestations of three of the other main miasms or ‘taints’; a ‘taint’ representing the idea of a memory or an echo of the past in our present lives.
Syphilis, for me as a practitioner, seeing what I see in my clinic and in the world, is the strongest miasmatic taint today. Other practitioners are likely to say that the cancer miasm is the most prevalent and this will make sense to all of us, without any further explaination. But the thing about the syphilitic miasm is that it is often hidden. It is all the things that simmer away in the background, in the dark, in the night, hidden in the unexpected places, that we are not aware of. We could make a long list here; child pornography, slavery of all kinds, wife beating, suicidal tendencies, deep, dark depression, madness (think of The Madness of King George and of course Henry IIIV, both of whom had syphilis). Terror cells, underground fascist groups, anyone considering change through hate, hurt and suppression or subversion – basically anything which has the potential to break down a person, a family, a society. These might all be considered to come out of the syphilitic miasm – dark, heavy, unnatural, perverted, heartless – all those things which happen behind closed doors, next door, up the road, that we have no idea about and can find so shocking when it comes to light.
But everything has a polarity and while we all may have some element, symptom, thought that comes out of this miasm, because no doubt we have all been tainted way back, what a homeopathic remedy from the syphilitic miasm group of remedies brings is lightness, brightness and hope, much as we are seeing with the coming together of communities to fight for the good of the world.
Some of the brilliant remedies for this particular family tendency are of course Syphilinum – a remedy I have used more frequently over the last few years than ever before; Diamond (brilliant, sparkling, perfect but so dark and despairing inside); Mercurius solubilis (mercury was one of the old treatments for syphilis and I find it so useful in vaccination cases or in changeable, mercurial children); Arsenicum album (another toxic element, great for anxiety with fastidiousness); Aurum metallicum (gold is one of the heavy metals and a huge remedy for deep, suicidal depression).
Many of these patients will present with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, heaviness, secrets and lies. Often we’re wading through heavy stories, heavy energy, patterns that we can see reflected back through the family.
And on the physical level, it is going to be very obvious to all that if we have asthma and our father had asthma and so did our grandmother on our father’s side, then this is an inherited – one might say ancestral – tendency that needs to be healed. But what about a great grandfather who became an orphan and ended up in a orphanage for his childhood years? Or generations of women who were subjugated, abused, who may have left their husbands and children – either physically by packing up and leaving or through suicide? This is our story and our inheritance and as we all share more and become more self-aware, now is the time to address not just our physical health, but our ancestral health.
What is your story?
People come with some fascinating problems and stories looking for help. Sometimes it may be a physical ailment or it might be something mental or emotional, but generally there is a thread that runs through the story and back through the generations. As a homeopath our job is to listen and to understand and then to find a remedy that matches the energy of this story to begin to bring about balance and healing. To many, and I suspect this would include psychologists and psychiatrists, these stories may sound fanciful and are potentially dismissed. But to the homeopath these stories are an echo of a journey, perhaps generations or lifetimes previously, which have traced their way through time unrevealed, unacknowledged, bringing a message and a plea for healing.
So many people talk about finding their life purpose or maybe they’ve even found their life purpose but can’t get started on this part of their journey. They may describe feeling held back or just stagnant and some people can feel this way for years or even decades. Sometimes we can see that the physical symptoms hold them back, flaring up each time they start to forge a path towards their purpose. This is frustrating and can mould a whole lifetime, dictating how each day and year is lived. We might say that chronic fatigue is just chronic fatigue, but when we start to explore this more deeply, we can see that in actual fact it often has its roots not in this individual’s lifetime, but coming down through the ancestors as a pattern of experience.
What can we do with homeopathy?
I’ve been in practice since 1998, started studying in 1993 and have used homeopathy since 1985. In the beginning I was treating my pets and sometimes my partner. My time at college in the homeopathic community was a time of sharing and understanding, of exploring my own self and hearing other people’s stories. When I started practising, while I had many cases with mental and emotional pictures, I initially focused on treating children and in particular ear problems. But always on my desk and in the back of my mind were the meditative proving remedies I was introduced to in 1993, at my very first study group. No doubt a sign of my own journey as a homeopath.
At that time this information came periodically as a journal and later on the journals were collated and published for practitioners to access the information. This in itself is a form of ancestry. Information passed down from generation to generation of homeopaths to build on and to understand more deeply through their own patients. This process feels like it brings light, but for some patients that generational/ancestral information may bring only darkness.
But back to these particular remedies. This information – revealed through meditation – allowed us to translate the sometimes esoteric language of our patients’ stories into the language of homeopathy and often to understand through reading the remedy notes what may be going on for them. Sometimes a patient might require one of the old remedies, like those mentioned above – remedies such as Arsenicum album, Mercurius, Syphilinum – but sometimes the language leads us on a journey through the meditative proving remedies.
Here are some snippets from some of the remedies we may use in these cases. These are practitioner-only remedies and there is obviously a much bigger picture, so these are examples of the words or themes a patient may present with, which may make us consider these remedies. They are no different or no better than the remedies we may be more familiar with, they are just sometimes clearly indicated. There is always a place for Aconite, Natrum mur and Ignatia, for example, and they are also profoundly deep acting when they fit the overall picture.
Meditative Proving Remedies
These are snippets I’ve picked out of the provings which relate directly to the language around ancestry and are from the words of the provers (those who took the remedy to ascertain its themes and uses through meditation).
- Berlin Wall – will move ancestors who do not want to move
- Buddleiah – releases the soul from bondage
- Chalice Well Water – Shifts ancestral karma
- Copper Beech – Brings to the surface both karmic and ancestral forces which hold you back from your path
- Rainbow – builds bridges on every level
- Lotus – once you have released miasmatic block, ancestral or karmic, remedy will seal and protect, to prevent slipping back
- Milky way – cleanses ancestral forces and restores ancient powers that our ancestors had way back
- Lac humanum – brings back contact if dissociated from ancestry and allows the soul to learn lessons to shift the ancestors. There is a strong link with the ancestors through the heart centre
- Red (the colour) – heals the kidneys and adrenal energy and contacts the ancestral energies. Anger
- Rhodochrosite – releases ancestral fear and brings understanding
- Moonstone – gives access to family karma on the female side, stuck ancestors
- Rose Quartz – releases ancestral grief
- Sea Salt – I use this remedy so often! It is similar to Natrum mur but accesses deep, deep hurts from past lives, ancestral hurt and trauma that has blocked the chakras and closed them down. Helps the kidney energy become freer, and allows joy to return to the spleen
All the remedies have connections to the miasmatic families and the ability to go deep and to heal. It’s all about the energy that is needed to bring about this shift. No matter what remedy we choose, the remedy is selected to treat Jane or Bill, not just anxiety or heart disease or grief.
Remedies can bring those “aha” moments where we make connections, where we realise this isn’t just about us, that these symptoms we’ve carried around for years or a life time don’t belong to us alone. They are something we carry for our family, maybe because we are the ones who will break the link of sickness or madness or shame. And it doesn’t have to be homeopathy that does this, but it does need to be something deep reaching and dynamic.
Sometimes a single remedy can do the job to clear the debris of aeons. The homeopathic manifesto is to “find the simillimum”, the remedy that fits the whole picture, and we are told this will heal the whole case. I’ve certainly had cases like this, those perfect examples of how amazing homeopathy can be, how people really are ready right at that moment to heal. But homeopathy, like life, can also be a journey and if we are looking at a history of “dis-ease” which stretches back over generations and through time, it may take some work and undertanding and more than one remedy to peel back the layers of the onion to get to the core – a favourite phrase of homeopaths everywere!
Melanie Creedy originally trained in the UK in the early 1990s and holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Homeopathy. She is registered with the Australian Register of Homoeopaths (AROH) and is a member of the Australian Homoeopathic Association.
She was Vice President and Professional Development Coordinator of the Australian Homoeopathic Association from 2011 to 2015 and is editor of the AHA National Newsletter.
Melanie has used homeopathy for 30 years and has been in practice since 1998. Her physical journey began with poor health from childhood, leading her to explore natural therapies. Her journey with homeopathy has seen her run a general homeopathic clinic and The Children’s Ear Clinic in Western Australia, but always the esoteric side has been strong and clear. Her tree change to beautiful Tasmania brought about several ranges of Essences, created in the garden at Wyldwood and spread the word to a wider audience, as a homeopath who is recognised throughout Australia.
Melanie’s spiritual journey started long before that and she certainly remembers a deep interest in God when she was under 10 years old. That journey has taken her through an exploration of many facets of spirituality, to a point where she realised her path had to be her own and her walk was alone. As a deep thinker and a passionate blogger, many of these thoughts become blogs in an effort to demystify the myths which are created by so called ‘gurus’, looking to hold the attention of a seeker.
Melanie works with people on their life path using soul talk and soul listening and intuiting esoteric vibrational remedies to remove obstacles on the path. This can relate to physical, mental and emotional issues which are often part of our ‘soul choices’ for this lifetime. Her approach is simple but deep, grounded, thoughtful and pragmatic. Not too much airy fairy speak going on here, just a drawing together of the strings of your life.
