Kids & EMFs; at Home and at School

I wrote a fairly extensive post on the impact of EMFs (electro-magnetic radiation/frequencies from phones, wifi, powerlines, smart meters, medical devices, etc) and other technology on our health back in 2019, which you can read here.

Five years on from the original post and with 5G active in some areas this is going to become more and more of an issue for many of us.

The problem is becoming more and more of an issue and I do give away my age to some extent when I say that I remember our son’s classroom before there was even cabled internet, let alone wifi.

Certainly in the intervening years it’s clear that a lot of sensitive kids don’t deal well with this interference with their nervous systems, and while many kids are being diagnosed with ADHD and similar, it may simply be that they are susceptible to the effects of EMFs in the classroom.

A study in 2020 CEP.org stated that in today’s world, most children are exposed to various manmade electromagnetic fields (EMFs). EMFs are electromagnetic waves less than 300 GHz. A developing child’s brain is vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation; thus, their caregivers’ concerns about the health effects of EMFs are increasing.

Little appears to be known about the exact amount of daily EMF exposure that can affect a child’s health and whether the effects of EMF exposure are similar to those of adults. The developing nervous system is more conductive and absorbs more electromagnetic energies than those of adults, which is a concern.

How does it present?

Common symptoms in school aged children might include some or all of the symptoms below just for starters. Some of these are recorded in studies and some are from my own observation in clinic:

  • headache
  • restlessness
  • tremor
  • dizziness
  • memory loss
  • loss of concentration
  • sleep disturbance
  • hearing disturbance
  • tinnitus
  • irritability

There have also been several preliminary studies looking at the association between early exposure to EMFs and the development of autism. The connection has not been ruled out, but requires further research according to one of the studies I read recently.

What can you do?

Are you either aware of how the EMFs from wifi, mobile phones and other devices affect your kids during the school day, or wondering why they come home in such a state?!

This is becoming more and more of an issue and I do give away my age to some extent when I say that I remember our son’s classroom before there was even cabled internet, let alone wi-fi. Since this was a Steiner school it was a massive decision to allow what we already knew was potentially damaging energy to be permanently installed, but technology moves forward and the students needed the same opportunities as kids in other schools.

Certainly in the intervening years it’s clear that a lot of sensitive kids don’t deal well with this interference with their nervous systems, and while many kids are being diagnosed with ADHD and similar, it may simply be that they are susceptible to the effects of EMFs in the classroom and at home.

I’ve written about heavy metals, in particular copper, in the past and I often say to clients these days that if you are full of heavy metals (which can be an issue after vaccination, may be an inherited load or may also be absorbed environmentally) then you are a good conductor for EMFs.

Constitutional support (ie treat the child as an individual rather than with a protocol) to strengthen the system and make the child more resilient, and some detoxing can be helpful in these cases.

Get in touch with your homeopath to talk about this. Homeopathy works well for EMFs because our remedies are vibrational frequencies themselves, meaning they resonate in a similar way (but as a good intervention) to bring balance to a troubled system.

A simple solution, which seems to help a lot of people, and one which I’ve recently been suggesting to parents, is to add our WyldChyld I-Clear essence to the child’s school water bottle as a way of reducing the effect. This way each time they have a drink at school they are settling and supporting their nervous systems.

Electro-Emissions from the EnviroToxins range (same product different format and name) can be used as a whole body or room spray at home as well, and comes in drops and pilules too.

Monitoring and/or limiting exposure to hand held devices is also very important as there are enough studies now to know the longer term impact of too much screen time on children, particularly if introduced in the early developmental years.

Want some more information?

If you want a website which collates information and research I would suggest taking a look at EMR Australia. This is a business selling products to reduce exposure, so do be aware of this but they have some good information.

Here is their page on the responsibility of schools and educators in terms of EMR which is also worth making yourself familiar with.

This is an interesting article from Healthline on the contradictions between different agencies on the risks and the levels.

There is a lot of good solid information out there on which to make an informed decision. Obviously there are people who have a lot invested in the use and uptake of various devices and technologies, so it’s important to choose studies that are independent and also to think ahead about your children’s future.

Let’s be cautious rather than taking a “she’ll be right mate” attitude to this serious issue.

She is registered with the Australian Register of Homoeopaths (AROH) and is a member of the Australian Homoeopathic Association. She was Vice President and Professional Development Coordinator of the Australian Homoeopathic Association from 2011 to 2015 and editor of the AHA National Newsletter from 2012 to 2020.

Melanie has used homeopathy since the mid-1980s and has been in practice since 1998. For many years she ran The Children’s Ear Clinic in Western Australia, but since her tree change to Tasmania, has a special interest in helping individuals manage their life and health through looking at a diagnosis or condition in relation to the symbolism of this unique picture. Armed with a range of remedies from the most common to the most unusual and esoteric, Melanie guides people to plumb the depths of their life and spiritual path with homeopathy to help them find insights, to understand and to heal.

For many years Melanie taught people how to use homeopathy in their homes, with their children and with their pets. She has run classes on how to use homeopathy with native animals and taught courses on homeopathy  for birthing to doulas. Since moving to Tasmania she has found writing a better forum to reach more people. You will find many posts reaching back over her 25 years in practice here, revised and updated over time.
