ABC (Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla)

Description

ABC is a traditional homeopathic children’s combination for unsettled or unhappy babies due to pain or fever with teething, or children who may be off colour due to the onset of a minor illness.

ABC contains the commonly used remedies Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla because sometimes it’s hard to decide which one of these remedies to use when your child is unwell.

Aconite 30c – fevers where child is hot, dry and usually thirsty. Symptoms that come on suddenly, especially in the middle of the night such as ear pain or croup, which may result from being in a cold wind or from a fright/shock. Patient may be restless and anxious. Always seek medical assistance for fever in a baby under six months old.

Belladonna 30c – acute illnesses where the child radiates heat, often with hot head and cold feet. Barking cough, hot, red, painful ears, teething with intolerance of noise and being jarred. Child may be hyper or lethargic. Usually no thirst. Symptoms often come on late afternoon.

Chamomilla 30c – most striking symptom is that the patient will be very irritable and usually won’t know what they want. Child is often better for being carried! Useful for teething and any other ailments when it fits this picture.

This is a good all purpose children’s remedy.

Current advice from The Melbourne Children’s Hospital on treating fevers is not to administer medication (paracetamol, neurofen, etc) for a fever under 38 degrees if the child is reasonably happy, drinking, etc.  You can read their advice here.

Dosage for Remedies

These notes are a general guide.

Homeopathy is not an exact science and while we can offer general suggestions as to how to give the remedies, each case will be a little different in terms of how often a remedy may be required to bring about improvement.

With homeopathics, because we are working with energy, not substance, we want to give just enough to stimulate the body to do the job. If your remedy works brilliantly with the first dose, you don’t need to repeat unless the symptoms appear to be coming back again.

Drops

Our products are made up according to traditional homeopathic pharmacy protocols and include a small amount of pure alcohol as a preservative.  You can read the FAQ here on alcohol in remedies.

For newborns,  if you do not wish to put the drops in the mouth, you may apply to the soles of the foot or the top of the head. You can also purchase drops and add a spray top to your order, so that you can spray the remedy onto the soles of the feet. The remedy will work just as well whichever way you use it.

Babies under 6 months – 1 drop or 1 spray

Babies 6-12 months       – 2 drops or 1 spray

12 months and above   – 4 drops

Organic German Sucrose

Give 1 or 2 pilules per dose regardless of age.

Crush between 2 clean teaspoons if you are giving to a baby and you are uncomfortable with giving whole.

Sometimes the pilules can look wet. This is due to the nature of the organic sucrose. The alcohol – which is the remedy applied to the pilules – will evaporate off as you use your remedies. They should not stick together and this does not affect the effect of the remedies.

Tissue Salts

If you have selected a single tissue salt remedy or a combination, the general suggestion is to take three times a day for up to three months (as per Dr Schuessler’s advice). However, we would expect you would see improvement much sooner than this, likely as soon as a couple of weeks.  If you have taken for one month with no obvious difference, choose another tissue salt or consult your homeopath.

Bottle Sizes

10g pilules: approximately 110 pilules

30ml drops: approximately 120 doses at 4 drops per dose

50ml drops: approximately 200 doses at 4 drops per doses

How often you give is going to depend on how acute the symptoms are, ie how intense.

If symptoms are intense, ie child is warm and you are concerned, you could give doses every 10 minutes up to a total of five doses.

If symptoms do not improve, follow the standard advice for treating a fever in a child and contact Health Direct or your health care provider.

If the symptoms improve, reduce how often you give the dose.

You don’t need to keep giving the remedy if the fever goes down. Just repeat if it starts to increase again – this is the rule of thumb for homeopathic remedies.

Dose only if required otherwise let the immune system do it’s job.

If symptoms are not intense, you might just give 3 or 4 times a day or as required.

Remember to reassess your remedy if the symptom picture changes. The fever may be moving through the system and need a different remedy to support the process.

If symptoms persist and you are giving very frequent doses over a number of hours or days, contact your healthcare provider or homeopath for more individualised remedies.
