Croup Trio

Description

Croup is a potentially serious event, but while croup can be scary and can sometimes necessitate a visit to emergency, there are times when homeopathy can be a good additional support.

There are three commonly and traditionally used remedies in homeopathy for managing the early stages of croup.

You could use these remedies alongside your plan from your GP or as a first step, even if you are preparing for a trip to the hospital.

What is the Croup Trio?

1. Aconite 30c – the first stage of croup when the child wakes coughing and gasping, often in the middle of the night, and you as a parent are freaked out.
2. Spongia 30c – this is often the second stage (we try not to generalise in homeopathy) when the cough is barking like a seal and sounds really nasty.
3. Hepar Sulph 30c – this is often stage three where the cough becomes loose and hacking and may linger and take time to resolve.

Note

If your child is having recurrent and/or severe bouts of croup then it is not appropriate to treat this yourself, although these remedies may ease the severity and duration.

Your best option to reduce the frequency and severity of croup is a consultation with a registered and experienced homeopath to look at the underlying family medical history and to work out individualised remedies for your child. This should help break the cycle and bring the system back into balance.

Always see your GP or ED for fever in a child under 6 months old or any age if your child is having trouble breathing.

These remedies are only suitable for short term, infrequent occurrences of croup and should not be used for recurrent, frequent or severe croup without referral to your homeopath or other healthcare professional.

Dosage for Remedies

These notes are a general guide.

Homeopathy is not an exact science and while we can offer general suggestions as to how to give the remedies, each case will be a little different in terms of how often a remedy may be required to bring about improvement.

With homeopathics, because we are working with energy, not substance, we want to give just enough to stimulate the body to do the job. If your remedy works brilliantly with the first dose, you don’t need to repeat unless the symptoms appear to be coming back again.

Drops

Our products are made up according to traditional homeopathic pharmacy protocols and include a small amount of pure alcohol as a preservative.  You can read the FAQ here on alcohol in remedies.

For newborns,  if you do not wish to put the drops in the mouth, you may apply to the soles of the foot or the top of the head. You can also purchase drops and add a spray top to your order, so that you can spray the remedy onto the soles of the feet. The remedy will work just as well whichever way you use it.

Babies under 6 months – 1 drop or 1 spray

Babies 6-12 months       – 2 drops or 1 spray

12 months and above   – 4 drops

Organic German Sucrose

Give 1 or 2 pilules per dose regardless of age.

Crush between 2 clean teaspoons if you are giving to a baby and you are uncomfortable with giving whole.

Sometimes the pilules can look wet. This is due to the nature of the organic sucrose. The alcohol – which is the remedy applied to the pilules – will evaporate off as you use your remedies. They should not stick together and this does not affect the effect of the remedies.

Tissue Salts

If you have selected a single tissue salt remedy or a combination, the general suggestion is to take three times a day for up to three months (as per Dr Schuessler’s advice). However, we would expect you would see improvement much sooner than this, likely as soon as a couple of weeks.  If you have taken for one month with no obvious difference, choose another tissue salt or consult your homeopath.

Bottle Sizes

10g pilules: approximately 110 pilules

30ml drops: approximately 120 doses at 4 drops per dose

50ml drops: approximately 200 doses at 4 drops per doses
